Regarding the implied ship-design feature:
I hope that there will still be default styles and that it won't be left to the player to design the ships' visual look. (the actual ships, not the internal placement of the modules)

I discovered awhile back that I'm not very good at designing ships, and I hope that this feature is geared more towards modders rather than everyone.

Also, that's a really amazing screenshot.

I dont think we need to scrap the idea for that reason. look at GalCiv2 you can build your own ships, arm a template, or just use pre-built ships.

I never said we should scrap it, just don't make it a central part of the game.

I've been doing some work on in-battle GUI things today, here is a screenshot (sorry its big) with a selected ship showing the firing arc of selected weapon module, current destination and primary tactical target, plus white lines from each weapon module to their currently selected target.
That details box, and the way it anchors, is likely to change a lot, and of course stylistically this is old GSB1 GUI everywhere, and some hacks.

being able to pin some windows to the screen and move it around seems like it would be useful features. makes it easier to track the status of multiple important ships in larger battles. showing the destination and target in that window would help a lot too.

on the graphical side of the gui, i like the robust industrial look of GSB1, but i would personally prefer something more in style of partially translucent holographic windows.

moving them around and stat-track your ships mid-battle would give the player something to do while the fleet blows stuff up in the background (though i know i'd close down those windows most of the time and just look at the explodiness).

Yeah I love that visual style too, and definitely planning on going more that way. I'm hoping to make the game work really well on multiple monitors, so pinning might be a good idea there.

When it comes to making GSB 2.0 happen, if anyone out there has not done so already then please read this at Cliffski's blog.
It will give you a deeper insight into some of the issues that he faces on a daily basis. . .

Interesting post. I can understand how doing something all by yourself could be so tough. Having additional professionals by your side can help to accomplish so much more.

Whoo-ee, that's a beast! I dig it. :)

I also like the new status display I'm seeing on the left side for each ship. Makes it a bit easier to figure out "Whose shields did I just hear collapsing?"

I was under the impression that those were placeholder ships of some kind. Was I wrong?

No, they are ships that can be found in the game ;)
I would imagine that Cliff will release more information about the ships along the way.
