That's neat. It looks upside down to me, though it doesn't really matter.

Also, now we know what the United Federation of Planets ships look like in the Gratuitous Space Battles Universe, though I don't recognize NCC 1337 Positech from any Star Trek show or movie that I can remember. I guess the UFP and Starfleet probably had some major copyright infringement battles with the Federation before switching over to a less similar hull form.

Well the issue of exact hull design is a very interesting one which at some point I'll be talking about, probably when I officially announce the game being in development.

Just to be clear, what I said earlier was in the spirit of a mild joke about the GSB Federation and the Star Trek Federation, rather than being any remotely serious accusation of copyright infringement. It's just that, given the description of GSB's Federation, it strikes me as the kind of stunt they might pull because they wouldn't want their contract enforcement division to be mistaken for someone else, or vice versa.

Also, are the ships we're seeing that don't match up with already-existing factions an indication of a new faction or two?

well......that question has an interesting answer (as does the post above yours), but I'm going to wait a few weeks more before I offer an explanation as to what I mean :D

I imagine the glowing radar dish-thingy at the front-ish part of the ship is rotating. Perhaps one of the "buff" modules that has been theorized around?
The screaming red colourscheme is not my cup of tea, but thats just personal preference. Ship still looks nice.

i remember back when you asked for artists, you mentioned you wanted planets as a seperate thing. is the planet drawn seperately to the background here? or is it part of the backdrop image, as in GSB1?

Ponyus, based on what I have read and seen in GSB already, i am willing to bet that the background in GSB 2 will be using several layers using code similar to the [Terrain] feature.

In other words, Cliffski is breaking out the parallax.

Yup, the planets are definitely in parallax, as are the major stars, and lots of things. It's parallax city.
