Okay, this may seem like a weird thing to ask, but is the randomized Z coordinate when my ships deploy something I can switch off? I didn't see it in the options but I know from experience that just because I couldn't find it doesn't mean it ain't there.
The variable depth of the battlefield is a cool feature, but I find it has the effect of making my fleet formations look nothing like how I set them up, and it makes it very difficult to tell what the heck is going on. Half the time I can't quickly tell what kind of ship I'm looking at because I've got dreadnoughts looking smaller than cruisers and so forth. When you're talking about a battle with nearly a thousand ships between both sides, I need all the help I can get keeping track of what's doing well and what's getting mulched. Makes it pretty much impossible to really refine a fleet for redeployment, which basically sucks the fun out of doing challenges. :(

While my ability to succeed is finite, my capacity for failure knows no bounds.
