Re: More fighter feedback

Interesting. So as immediately actionable things, you would like to see torpedo weight reduced. I deliberately wanted 'bombers' to be slow, to convey the power of the weapon they were carrying, have I just gone overboard? :D It's not possible to get torpedos above a 2.0 speed on a lot of the fighte...

Re: How do YOU use fighters in gsb2

I'm okay with how tractors work now, they probably just recharge too quickly. When located near a friendly fighter squad, they hit on an target, and the entire squad dumps fire on it, killing it in under a second. This is likely keeping the recharge time really low as the beam isn't running long eno...

Re: More fighter feedback

A fighter example: Thrustmax engine is 30 thrust, with weight of 3. Speed of any given single-engine craft will therefore be 30/(3+weight), with weight being everything else but the engine. I'm arbitrarily choosing the Slingshot class hull, which has a starting power of 2.75. A medium power plant, a...

Re: How do YOU use fighters in gsb2

I get into thrust/weight relationships a bit in the other thread. Heavier engines in proportion to the rest of the craft weight stack more poorly.

You could always add a 'fighter ionizing module' on carriers, if there absolutely needs to be a paid cost for mitigating tractors.

Re: The thread about limpets!

This is with the latest patch, yes. They're now starting to reach fighters but the overall refuel rate is negative in some cases.

Re: The thread about limpets!

The refuel rate isn't high enough to keep up with use. I'm spotting fighters with more or less permanent refuel drones attached, or ones bouncing back and forth between flying to objective and flying to the carrier as their fuel ticks up and down.

[1.31] Crash on battle load - loading layers

I very frequently get a crash on load on repeated attempts at a challenge. I happened to notice this today, as it might be helpful: it was loading layers for a ship type that I had stripped out from the previous attempt and were no longer present. Perhaps these crashes are related to loading assets ...

More fighter feedback

There's so many balance directions fighters/gunships can be taken to, but it all hinges on this fundamental question. How fast should fighters be, both as a minimum and a maximum? I'm just going to call everything a fighter, but obviously gunships are included. Fighters fall into several speed categ...

Re: How do YOU use fighters in gsb2

I'd like to point out that most of the space on fighters/gunships is going to engines. I'm playing around with a torpedo bomber that has four . Given more slots, I'd probably be filling them with engines anyway, turning my fighters into a practical examination of the tyranny of the rocket equation. ...

Re: How do YOU use fighters in gsb2

I can imagine it being a nice use for a 'spare' module slot I'm not sure those exist on fighters. Or gunships for that matter. I really dislike the introduction of hard-counter modules like this: Yes, it would hurt tractors (if the module is good) so opponent AA setups should theoretically diversif...

Re: How do YOU use fighters in gsb2

It is best to deploy support DDs in groups of 3-4; one Scramble DD in front with 2-3 Shield Support right behind. Not only do they synergize with cruisers, together with multi-point tractors and backed by cruiser pulse lasers (and maby a small gunship squadron), no strike craft assault is cost-effe...

Re: How do YOU use fighters in gsb2

Fighter missiles are just like the rockets from GSB1, in that they fully penetrate frigate/destroyers. You can even penetrate the destroyer medium shields with dogfight missiles. Fighter missiles are actually a bit better this time around - or rather, frigates are worse - because it's near impossibl...

Re: Thoughts on Engines

It would be possible to "normalize" fighter engines somewhat by increasing thrust as well as weight on the engines to make the rest of the craft weight a smaller proportion. This works without invalidating existing designs. An extreme example for the math: if we had an engine that has 3000...

Re: The thread about limpets!

I do think there needs to be a greater discussion about fighters sometime, since that's what limpets act on. That said: I primarily play Yootani, and my successful fighter designs range from 3.43 speeds to 3.00. (The Spincaster engine... is incredible) Limpets seem to have trouble catching these fig...

Re: Further thoughts

Pretty much. I would think an easier way to reduce the incidence of stuff flying offscreen is to just increase the base maneuverability of engines a bit. Is it mainly dreadnoughts doing this? Maneuverability is really strange - it's effected by weight but not speed bonuses, and fighter maneuverabili...
