So basically you want to design your ships in Visio. Actually, yeah, count me in for that one too. To give yourself space for a properly big juicy engine (and it's uniquely coloured flare/burn) you could 'hide' the ship model and build from scratch. Heavily reducing missile damage may make some of the maps a little unbalanced in favour of attackers - it's already generally easy to overwhelm a defence, particularly with 3-4 supply trucks and supporting repair trucks. Hmm, computer vs computer would be excellent. It'd make map creation a metagame in its own right, trying to create and finetune balanced maps.

Of course, that'd then lead to division vs division balance issues, but that's where the online game excels :)

New "plume of smoke" effect for destroyed vehicles/turrets is nice. It does obscure the battlefield, but I find this adds to the game rather than detracts - it makes me want to make a map where the plumes of smoke form part of the game balance.

I was thinking more crudely of the size of the vehicle. Large tanks/mechs give more cover than small ones. That two large tanks have different levels of armour is less relevant than that the bullets just go straight over the little tank. Of course, if you're being really nasty, large mechs would giv...

Rather than an automagic deadzone (erm, alivezone) behind tanks, just implement proper line-of-sight on laser and fast moving projectile attacks. Big tank between gun and man? Cover! No tanks in the way? Die! Ideally you'd do the same for turrets too, where small turrets can't fire machine guns thro...

Given it should (he says, naively) be quick & easy to add, just throw it into the game and lets see how it works. Certainly something to make infantry a viable attacking option would be nice, and camouflage is probably easier than APCs :) The biggest issue is that camouflage works best on static...

Extending this idea, why is the GUI, HUGE on 1280x800? shouldn't it be the other way around. e.g 1280x800 the GUI should be smaller, and on a larger than 1920x1200 resolution the GUI is bigger? Erm. The gui is X pixels high. I can't be bothered to measure it, but lets call the minimap 200 pixels hi...

Unit design in GTB feels very limited to me. One of the best things about GSB was balancing the crew capacity, power, shields/armor, and weapons with the number of available slots. Ah, try a map like Hurtgen (revisited). Parallel paths are available, so stick your heavy armour on one and your nippy mechs on the other.

Surely the ideal answer is a translation of GSB into an aerial context (fighters, bombers and armoured zeppelins) which could largely keep the same models, and permit a GSB air battle to takr place over a GTB landscape.
