Gratuitous Space Battles Beta Patch 1.21. Nearly done….
March 31, 2015 | Filed under: gratuitous space battles | gsb2
006Soooo…Behold, its patch day for you lucky people who are currently enjoying space battles of a gratuitous nature. The latest patch has numerous exciting changes, here are some of the big ones:
1) Added remaining medium and hard deployments.
2) Lots of balance tweaks.
3) Total conversion mod support: Base game can now be disabled under mods.
4) Added default ship designs for the Yootan hulls.
5) Expert mode high scores for all applicable missions now get tracked online.
6) Retaliation challenges will now work correctly.
7) Added a bunch of new module graphics for some of the variations.
8) Added 10 New complex ship hull components for the terrans.
9) Some new explosion particle effects added.
Plus there are lots of behind-the-scenes bug fixes and a few optimizations, some of which came from making that rendering video I posted about.
So what is still left to do? well not much. The big ones are:
Get Linux & Mac Ports finished.
Get Final Text for all the supported languages (English, French, German, Spanish, Swedish, Dutch).
Some final bug fixing and polishing, and optimizing for crappy laptops!
The release trailer!
In the meantime here is a frankly stupidly big screenshot…
Don’t forget you get a steam key if you get the game (it wont work yet) and if you want, you can start playing the beta right now, just click below :D

Looks like the GDC talks I mentioned have been released. Even typography gets a mention (around 40 minutes in)!

I’ve had several crashes and I’m not sure why but it is happening in the “challenge” games. I’m pasting the event log below. I’ve had 5 crashes in 2 days. It does not appear to be “one” specific event that I can identify.

** I figured it out. It is when I am in the fleet deployment (or setup) map. During the give orders phase–If a ship already has an “escort” order and I click on it (to change the target ship) it crashes when I click the escort button with the slider in the existing orders list.
I hope this helps.
Hi, I cannot reproduce this. I suspect this is a ship design that has become invalid and the ship was removed, but the other ship still thinks it is escorting it. Can you re-create it with a free deployment?
I can delete the order and re-apply the “escort” order without a problem. That is what I did. The ships are working fine. It was just when I tried to alter the existing escort order that it did that. I cleaned my computer and hard drives (defrag, reg cleaned, and the rest) and maybe it will clean up any update/install glitches I may have had. I will report back.
Might help if the game stores the dump when it crashes somewhere (I think there’s some api or two you need to first intercept the crash and then to do the minidump). Alternatively if you have the right signing cert you can get to the dumps through MS site avoiding the need to intercept the crash. On my projects I monitor the CPU usage and do couple dumps if it’s too high too long as I prefer CPU usage low enough that the laptop fan doesn’t start spinning. With game that might not be the goal – except unless you tried to avoid sudden cpu throttling. (I’m hoping the Surface Pro 4 14″ is if not fanless, atleast has a responsive fan profile so I can trade some speed for fanless operation).
As my earlier comment got stuck in mod, I’ll repeat that no one should open this link as it contains big spoilers to perhaps best single player game of all time. gdcvault com/play/1021863/Classic-Game-Postmortem-Star
